Lewiston is a perfect walking and touring base being close to the world famous Loch Ness and in the heart of the Scottish highlands.

Lewiston, is just 0.5 miles from the village of Drumnadrochit ( shop, post office, hotel, restaurants, pubs, Loch Ness visitor Centre and only 1 mile walk or drive to the world famous Urquhart Castle - one of the top visitor attractions in Scotland. From Hillview cottage it is only about 0.75 mile walk through the 'Cover' down to the shores of Loch Ness for a picnic and some Nessie spotting in the famous Urquhart Bay!! There are also a number of high and low level circular hillwalks right form the cottage's front door. With the launch in 2002 of the Great Glen Way, there is a 73 mile long distance path from Fort William to Inverness. The route passes close to the cottage. This allows visitors to explore sections of it and perhaps complete in stages if return transport is organised.

It is just a short 30 minutes drive south west down the side of Loch Ness to the picturesque village of Fort Augustus and the bisection of the Caledonian Canal. Here in the centre of the village is a flight of 5 locks that provide a fascinating place to watch the world go by and view fishing,cruising and sailing boats passing through this unique canal designed by Thomas Telford and dating back to 1803.
Just 30 minutes drive north east takes you to the capital of the highlands, Inverness with supermarkets, shops, nightlife, cinemas, theatre and shopping facilities. It is 1.5 hours to the famous Eilean Donan castle ("on the road to the Isles") and the picture postcard village of Plockton (Hamish Macbeth fame). From Kyle of Lochalsh, the toll bridge takes you on to the Isle of Skye with a whole multitude of attractions including Dunvegan Castle - the oldest inhabited casltle in Britain.

Lewiston is just 1 hours drive from famous West Coast hub of Fort William (all facilities) and Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the UK). Access to Mull and Mallaig (with car ferry to Skye) - don't miss the world famous Fort William to Mallaig steam train journey of Harry Potter Fame !! From Fort William it is also a short drive to scenic Glencoe, Oban and Mull of Kintyre. From Lewiston heading north west, you can access the breathtaking wilderness areas to the north such as Torridon, Gairloch, Poolewe, Ullapool, Lochinver, Kinlochbervie and Durness, these being some of the remotest and unspoilt areas of Europe and boasting some of the finest beaches and hill walking areas in the country.

Lewiston is also close to the Moray Coast (the best weather in Scotland !!) and the Black Isle (Fortrose, Rosemarkie and Cromarty). From Lewiston you can easily take day trips and access the world famous whisky and castle trails in Moray and Aberdeenshire.
